The Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association (OEFFA) had a remarkable 2024, achieving significant milestones in policy advocacy and community engagement. With a focus on advancing soil health and sustainable farming, OEFFA worked tirelessly to support Ohio farmers and improve agricultural practices.
Advocating for Policy Change Under the leadership of new policy director Milo Petruziello, OEFFA amplified its voice on Capitol Hill and in Ohio.
The organization advocated for a new farm bill, advanced soil health legislation, and fostered relationships with key policymakers, including Ohio District 7 Congressman Max Miller. Engaging with legislators and community members, OEFFA hosted events across Ohio, giving farmers a platform to share their needs and priorities.
Community Engagement Initiatives OEFFA launched several new initiatives, including a Policy Film Screening Series and Policy Caucuses. These events attracted hundreds of participants, fostering discussions on environmental protection, organic agriculture, and strengthening local food systems.
A candidate questionnaire provided voters with insights into food and farm policy positions, empowering them to make informed decisions during the 2024 election.
Soil Health Advocacy Soil health was a major focus in 2024. OEFFA led the Ohio Soil Health Initiative (OSHI) and organized the inaugural Ohio Soil Health Week in November. This weeklong event featured 19 statewide programs and drew over 724 attendees.
Additionally, OEFFA’s advocacy resulted in progress for local soil health legislation, including H.B. 162, which recognizes Ohio Soil Health Week.
Looking Ahead to 2025 OEFFA plans to build on its 2024 successes by hosting a soil health luncheon, launching a podcast, and continuing its efforts to pass a farmer-friendly farm bill. These initiatives aim to strengthen the future of sustainable farming in Ohio.
OEFFA’s 2024 achievements highlight the power of collective action, setting the stage for impactful policy advancements in the years to come.
