Ohio Agriculture Department Allocates $12.6 Million for Food Supply Chain

Ohio Agriculture Department Allocates $12.6 Million for Food Supply Chain

The Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) is set to strengthen Ohio's food supply chain with a significant $12.6 million backing through the Resilient Food System Infrastructure (RFSI) Program. This initiative focuses on aiding businesses and producers operating within Ohio's food chain sector, aiming to fortify and streamline the state's food system from farm to table.

The RFSI Program, spearheaded by ODA, aims to direct funding into projects that facilitate supply chain coordination activities, foster the establishment of enhanced processing centers, and enhance the accessibility, affordability, and efficiency of distributing Ohio-produced goods. Potential projects may include the construction, expansion, and modernization of vital supply chain facilities.

Brian Baldridge, Director of ODA, stressed the vital role of this grant program in fortifying Ohio's agriculture community. "Investing in local producers and supporting Ohio's food system is crucial for the state's prosperity," Baldridge emphasized. "These grants not only create economic opportunities but also strengthen our agricultural backbone, benefiting both our communities and the farmers who sustain Ohio's food production."

The primary goal of the RFSI Program is to invigorate the middle of Ohio's food supply chain, fostering growth and resilience while bolstering local and regional food systems. It aims to generate new revenue streams for Ohio producers, stimulate economic circulation within rural areas, and diversify processing options within the state.

Interested parties seeking funding opportunities are encouraged to apply directly through ODA by the March 15, 2024 deadline. ODA specifically urges applications catering to smaller farms, new and beginning farmers, underserved producers, veteran producers, and marginalized communities.

Administered in partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agriculture Marketing Service (AMS), the RFSI Program's comprehensive guidelines, project prerequisites, and eligibility criteria can be accessed here. This program stands as a cornerstone in fortifying Ohio's food supply chain, aiming to foster growth, sustainability, and resilience within the state's agricultural landscape.
