In Ohio, favorable weather conditions have spurred agricultural activity, with warmer temperatures and reduced flooding allowing farmers to commence fieldwork. According to Ben Torrance, State Statistician at USDA NASS, Ohio Field Office, topsoil moisture levels are mostly adequate, facilitating planting and other farm tasks.
The average temperature for the week ending on April 21 was 5.6 degrees above normal, promoting fieldwork. Precipitation levels were slightly below average, with 2 suitable days for agricultural activities. Farmers have reported that flooding from earlier in the month has largely subsided, and fields are recovering well.
Fieldwork activities such as tillage, spraying, fertilizer applications, and planting have begun, with oats already 27 percent planted. Winter wheat progress is notable, with 69 percent jointed and a 68 percent good to excellent condition rating. Nitrogen applications to wheat have notably improved stand quality.
Pastures have greened up and are lush, providing ample grazing for livestock. Warmer conditions are advancing fruit phenology and increasing pollinator activity, promising a fruitful season ahead for Ohio's agriculture sector.
