Ohio wheat harvest nears completion amid favorable weather

By Andi Anderson

Ohio's wheat harvest is nearly complete, according to Ben Torrance, State Statistician at USDA NASS, Ohio Field Office.

Topsoil moisture conditions were rated as 5 percent very short, 27 percent short, 56 percent adequate, and 12 percent surplus, indicating varying moisture levels across the state.

The statewide average temperature for the week ending July 14 was 75.7 degrees, which is 2.3 degrees above normal.

Weather stations recorded an average of 0.75 inches of precipitation, 0.26 inches above average, allowing for 4.9 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending July 14.

Farmers reported continued dry conditions across the Southeast and South-Central parts of the state.

Despite these dry conditions, the corn crop condition was rated 67 percent good to excellent, and the soybean condition was rated 64 percent good to excellent, although both ratings were down from the previous week.

The winter wheat harvest reached 97 percent completion, showcasing the efficiency of Ohio's farmers.

Oat progress advanced with 89 percent headed and 35 percent mature. The crop condition for oats was rated 83 percent good to excellent, showing a slight improvement from the previous week.

The second cuttings of alfalfa and other dry hay were 68 percent and 51 percent completed, respectively. Pasture and range conditions were rated 43 percent good to excellent, reflecting the impact of the varying moisture levels.

In addition to harvesting wheat and oats, farmers continued with other essential activities, including straw baling, manure spreading, and planting double crop soybeans.

These ongoing field activities are crucial for maintaining the progress of various crops and ensuring a successful agricultural season.

Overall, the favorable weather conditions, with slightly above-normal temperatures and adequate precipitation, have supported the nearly complete wheat harvest and ongoing field activities in Ohio.

The dedication and hard work of Ohio's farmers are evident in the continued progress and good to excellent condition ratings for most crops.

As the season advances, the agricultural outlook for Ohio remains positive, with farmers effectively managing their crops and fieldwork activities.
