Organic Stewardship Council Formed to Support Organic Farmers

Organic Stewardship Council Formed to Support Organic Farmers

By Andi Anderson

The Organic Farming Research Foundation (OFRF) has introduced the Organic Stewardship Council (OSC), a newly formed advisory body dedicated to supporting organic and transitioning farmers.

The council consists of seven farmers from diverse agricultural backgrounds, representing different regions and farming communities.

By forming this advisory council, OFRF strengthens its commitment to shaping policies, research, and education based on farmer input. Executive Director Brise Tencer emphasized that the council empowers farmers to lead organic farming initiatives.

Following a competitive selection process, the council will work closely with OFRF’s Board and staff in several key areas. It will help shape research priorities, refine educational resources, and advocate for policies that benefit organic farmers.

The council will also provide feedback on the National Organic Research Agenda (NORA), OFRF’s Organic Research Hub, and Farm Bill priorities.

Among the inaugural members is Jordan Settlage, a dairy farmer from Ohio who operates 500 acres of certified organic land. As part of Organic Valley Cooperative, Settlage prioritizes regenerative agriculture and sustainable grazing practices.

The council will play a vital role in ensuring OFRF’s programs align with the real-world challenges organic farmers face. By elevating farmer voices, the initiative aims to promote climate resilience, soil health, and sustainable agricultural systems.
