Dr. Don Myers, a pioneer, educator, and scientist, was honored with induction into the Columbiana County Agriculture Hall of Fame during a ceremony at the Arts & Crafts Building at the fairgrounds.
Known for his deep roots in Columbiana County, Myers' career in agriculture was both long and distinguished.
"Columbiana County meant the world to dad," said Myers' son, Jeff. "Lisbon always had a spot in his heart. This induction would make him very proud. He cherished the time he had here and the friendships he made."
Born in Wayne County and a graduate of Northwestern High School in 1952, Myers attended Ohio State University and Michigan State University, earning degrees in Agronomy and Crop Sciences.
He began his career as the Ohio State County Extension Educator in Columbiana County before becoming a State Extension specialist and professor in the Ohio State University Department of Agronomy.
Myers was a two-time National Certified Alfalfa Seed Council Educator of the Year and was inducted into both the Ohio Farm Science Review and the Ohio Agricultural Halls of Fame. He also held leadership roles in the American Society of Agronomy and the Malabar Science Review.
Myers authored over 50 publications and was a pioneer in no-till no-plow farming, a concept initially met with skepticism.
"He played a key role in developing research test plots established in Wooster in 1962, the longest continually maintained no-till research plots in the world," said Don Humphrey of the fair board. Known as the "father of no-till forages in Ohio," Myers developed the innovative no-tillage forage seeding system, recognized globally.
Beyond his professional achievements, Myers was a devoted father who valued education. "He was the first in the family to receive a college education. From that point on, every child and grandchild has gotten an education," said Jeff, an Ohio State graduate himself.
Jeff and his mother Marilyn attended the induction ceremonies, joining a tradition started in 2000 by the Columbiana County Historical Association, the Columbiana County Agricultural Society, and the Columbiana County Farm Bureau.
Each year, inductees are honored posthumously with a framed biographical sketch or portrait displayed inside the Arts & Crafts Building during the fair.
Dr. Don Myers' legacy in agriculture and education continues to inspire and impact the community, highlighting his dedication to innovation and learning.
