New H5N1 resources support dairy farmers

New H5N1 resources support dairy farmers

By Jamie Martin

The National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) and the FARM Program have introduced two vital resources to support dairy farmers and regulatory officials during the ongoing H5N1 outbreak. These tools aim to enhance proactive measures and streamline testing procedures to protect cattle health and farm operations.

The first resource, Early Detection of H5N1 Virus in Bulk Tank Milk, available in both English and Spanish, emphasizes the importance of regular testing of bulk tank milk.

This practice enables dairy farmers in affected areas to prepare for potential outbreaks, mitigate risks, and ensure the safety of handlers. Routine testing serves as a frontline defense to maintain cattle health.

The second resource, a detailed 16-page guide titled Bulk Tank Milk Sample Logistics for H5N1 Testing, provides state regulatory officials with practical recommendations for using Grade “A” bulk tank milk samples in testing.

The guide addresses logistical challenges and fosters collaboration across the dairy industry by standardizing testing procedures.

Both resources were developed under the guidance of NMPF’s H5N1 Technical Committee, funded in part by a USDA cooperative agreement.

This committee, comprising dairy producers, veterinarians, and regulatory partners, prioritizes equipping the dairy industry with effective tools to manage H5N1 challenges.

These resources, along with additional tools and updates, are available on NMPF’s updated H5N1 webpage, supporting the industry’s collective effort to navigate the outbreak effectively.
