Ohio Funds Preservation of Local Farmland

Ohio Funds Preservation of Local Farmland

By Andi Anderson

Ohio's Department of Agriculture has announced funding support for land conservation efforts across the state. Nine land trusts, seven counties or townships, and 25 Soil and Water Conservation Districts will receive financial backing from the Clean Ohio Fund. This funding aims to facilitate the selection, closure, and monitoring of easements under the Local Agricultural Easement Purchase Program (LAEPP).

Local Ohio landowners interested in preserving their farmland can apply through their LAEPP sponsor organization. This round of funding amounts to $6 million and has sponsor certification in 51 counties. Those keen on participating should connect with the certified local sponsor in their county for application details.

The program allows landowners to voluntarily sell easements on their farms to the state, ensuring permanent agricultural use. Eligible farms must span at least 40 acres, actively engage in farming, participate in the Current Agricultural Use Valuation program, demonstrate land stewardship, enjoy local government support, and avoid being in the path of development.

The Clean Ohio Conservation Fund, this program, supported by voters in 2008, has contributed to preserving over 105,000 acres of agricultural land across 704 family farms in 62 counties. This effort aims to sustain and protect Ohio's agricultural heritage for generations to come.
