Rhode Island Launches $575K Farm Grants

Rhode Island Launches $575K Farm Grants

By Jamie Martin

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) has unveiled over $575,000 in new program funding to strengthen local food systems and farming operations. The announcement took place during the kickoff of RI Grown Week at Farm Fresh Rhode Island in Providence, celebrating the state’s thriving food and farming community.

Governor Dan McKee emphasized that investing in local agriculture supports access to healthy food while boosting economic growth and community resilience. Rhode Island’s farming sector, he noted, is vital to the state’s identity and sustainability.

The funding includes $125,000 through the Specialty Crop Block Grant Program (SCBGP) to help local farmers grow and market specialty crops such as fruits, vegetables, and tree nuts. Recipients include:

  • University of Rhode Island: $52,934 for educational workshops and a new cut flower resource hub.
  • Farm Fresh Rhode Island: $38,903 to expand food literacy programs for students statewide.
  • Revive the Roots (Smithfield): $33,437 for grower training and community outreach through events and tastings.

An additional $450,000 in funding will be distributed under the Local Agriculture and Seafood Act (LASA) program, prioritizing next-generation farmers and succession planning to secure the future of agriculture and aquaculture in the state. Applications close December 5, 2025, with a support webinar scheduled for October 20.

The RI Grown Week event also included workshops on produce safety, marketing, and land planning. Farmers and food producers met with experts to exchange knowledge and resources.

State officials encourage more farms, retailers, and markets to join RI Grown Week and promote their local products. The program continues to celebrate Rhode Island’s agricultural heritage while investing in a sustainable and secure food future.
