Tri-State Collaboration on Water Quality in Western Lake Erie Basin

Tri-State Collaboration on Water Quality in Western Lake Erie Basin

By Andi Anderson

Leaders from the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA), alongside counterparts from Indiana and Michigan, convened to address water quality concerns in the Western Lake Erie Basin (WLEB). The discussion aimed to foster collaboration and explore strategies to enhance water conservation and quality in the region.

At the Tri-State Water Quality meeting, ODA Director Brian Baldridge, Indiana State Department of Agriculture Director Don Lamb, and Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Director Tim Boring exchanged insights and ideas. The focus was on identifying opportunities for joint efforts to improve water quality in the WLEB watershed.

ODA's conservation efforts, notably through the H2Ohio program, have prioritized initiatives targeting phosphorus runoff reduction in the WLEB. By incentivizing farmers to adopt scientific best management practices, the program contributes to mitigating water quality issues.

During the meeting, ODA provided an overview of the H2Ohio program, showcasing its impact and effectiveness in addressing water conservation challenges. Indiana and Michigan directors also shared their respective strategies and approaches to safeguarding water sources in their states.

The exchange of ideas laid the groundwork for future collaboration among the three states. Continued discussions and joint initiatives are envisioned as key steps in addressing water quality issues comprehensively in the WLEB watershed.
