April Survey Shows Decline in Farmer Confidence

April Survey Shows Decline in Farmer Confidence

By Jamie Martin

Farmer sentiment declined in April based on results from a nationwide agricultural survey conducted by Purdue University. The report showed lower confidence compared to March mainly due to worsening views of current conditions and future expectations.

High input costs remained the leading concern for farmers. Nearly half of survey participants identified production expenses as their biggest challenge. Concerns about accessing key inputs such as fertilizer also increased reflecting disruptions in global supply markets.

Global conflict had a noticeable impact on expectations. Many farmers believed that rising fertilizer and energy prices linked to international events would reduce net farm income in 2026. This added another layer of uncertainty to farm planning decisions.

According to the media release, “This month's survey included questions related to the impact of the Iran conflict on net farm income and corn breakeven prices in 2026. Approximately two-thirds of the respondents expected their net farm income to decline in 2026 due to the Iran conflict.”

The survey also highlighted declining optimism about the country’s overall direction. Fewer farmers believe national policies are moving in a positive direction. Expectations for higher farmland values five years from now also fell suggesting weaker long-term confidence.

Differences between farm sectors were clear. Livestock producers were more optimistic about future profitability compared to crop producers indicating uneven sentiment across agriculture.

In summary, April results show farmers becoming more cautious. Rising costs of global uncertainty and policy concerns continue to shape decisions and outlooks across the agricultural sector.
